My prices exclude tax. How does nouz read them?
nouz adds the tax Shopify charged to each line of the order, so a shop whose prices exclude tax gets the same 34-line statement as one whose prices include it. Shopify records which kind every order is, and there is nothing to set up.
In the EU, prices usually include VAT. In the US and Canada, in net-price B2B shops and in some Shopify Markets setups they do not, and the tax is added at checkout. Down to the tax line, the P&L states amounts the way the customer paid them, tax included, and Net Revenue and every line below exclude it. So on an order whose prices exclude tax, each line is raised by the rate Shopify actually charged on it, its shipping takes the rest of the order's tax, and the Taxes line then takes the tax out again.
An example at 10% sales tax: an item priced at $100,00, with $10,00 of tax added at checkout, reads as $110,00 in GMV and gross revenue, $10,00 on the Taxes line and $100,00 in Net Revenue, exactly like the same item sold at $110,00 with the tax inside. Compare-at prices, discount codes and refunds are put on the same basis, so a full refund takes back exactly what the order added.
A store can hold both kinds, for instance after moving from net to gross prices or with a B2B market beside its shop, and each order is read on its own basis. The Order lines export has a Prices incl. tax column that says which kind each order was. Because nouz reads the tax Shopify charged rather than a rate of its own, the Taxes line holds US sales tax as readily as European VAT, and every margin is measured against Net Revenue, the same figure for both kinds of shop.
