Setting up your costs

Product costs, logistics rules, payment fees and overhead. The one-time work that makes the number real.

  3. 03What does the Products page show?It lists every variant you sell, with its price, its unit cost and what one piece leaves you.
  4. 04What is Margin per unit on the Products page?Margin per unit is what one piece leaves you after paying for the piece itself.
  5. 05What do Compare-at price and Price reduction mean on the Products page?They are prices from Shopify, shown in the From Shopify section of a variant's page, below the Unit cost section.
  6. 06What does Where the price goes show on a variant's page?It splits the price of one piece into the parts it goes to.
  7. 07What is a product's packaging size?It is how much room one piece takes in a parcel.
  8. 08What is Reorder lead time on the Products page?A lead time is how many days a reorder takes to arrive: from ordering new stock until it is in your warehouse, ready to sell.
  9. 09What does Save on a variant's page save?It saves everything you changed on the variant, in one click.
  10. 10Why does a cost show where it came from?So that a sync never writes over something you typed.
  11. 11What happens when a product has no weight?On a rate card that prices by weight, its parcel takes the zone's last price, the one for the heaviest parcels.
  12. 12Can I import my costs from a spreadsheet?Only ad spend comes in from a file.
  13. 13What does the effective-from date do?It is the day a new cost starts to count.
  14. 14Should I edit a cost rule or add a new one?Add a new version when the cost really changed, and correct a version only when its value was wrong.
  15. 15Can I enter a cost change I found out about late?Yes. Save the new cost with its start set to the day the change really started: New prices from on Logistics, New fee from on Transaction fees, New cost from on Products.
  16. 16Can a fee or shipping rule end on a date?Yes. Open the cost or the payment method, find its newest version in the history, and click its three-dot menu.
  17. 17What happens when I delete a cost rule?The rule goes, and the rule before it takes back its days.
  18. 18Why did a past day recompute?Because something that day depends on has changed.
  19. 19What do Active, Now, Scheduled, Ended and Booked mean on the cost pages?They say whether a cost applies today, starts later or has stopped.
  20. 20How do I save, discard or close a cost I am editing?It depends on the page.
  21. 21Why can I not change a cost?Only an owner or an admin can change costs.
  22. 22What does the Logistics page show?It shows the five costs of getting an order to your customer and back, on one page.
  23. 23What are the five logistics components?They are the five logistics costs: Shipping, Pick & pack, Packaging, Returns and Packaging EPR.
  24. 24How do shipping zones work?A zone is a group of countries you ship to at the same price.
  25. 25How do I fill in a shipping rate card?A rate card is your carrier's price list per parcel.
  26. 26How do I add or change a shipping zone?Open Logistics and click Shipping.
  27. 27What is the catch-all zone for?It catches every country that none of your other zones lists.
  28. 28What do the figures on a logistics cost page mean?Each cost page opens with four figures for the last 30 days, and shows a short line while you type new prices.
  29. 29How do I enter pick and pack costs?Pick and pack is what your warehouse charges to take items off the shelf and pack them.

  31. 31What is a packaging composition?It is what the packaging of one parcel is made of, by weight.
  32. 32How are return costs charged (Return label and Handling)?As a return label plus handling, charged once for each refund where items come back.
  33. 33Where do EPR rates come from?From your own scheme contract.
  34. 34Does nouz handle EPR registration or reporting?No: registering and reporting stay with your EPR scheme and your advisers.
  35. 35What does the Transaction fees page show?It shows what each payment method charges you to take a payment, and what that came to.
  36. 36Are payment fee rates filled in for me?For Shopify Payments you need no rate at all: nouz uses the fee Shopify itself reports on each payment.
  37. 37How do I add a payment fee rule?Open Transaction fees.
  38. 38How are chargeback fees handled?A lost Shopify Payments dispute comes off your P&L as a return, on the day Shopify closed it.
  39. 39What does the Overhead page show?It lists every cost you add by hand: running costs, marketing spend and one-offs.
  40. 40How do I add running costs, one-offs and my own categories?Open Overhead in the sidebar and click Add cost.
  41. 41Where do I put an influencer retainer or other marketing spend?On the Overhead page: click Add cost, choose Marketing spend, and enter the retainer as a monthly amount.
  42. 42What are Other costs on the Overhead page?Other costs are one-off bills outside your normal running costs, like a repair, a lawyer or a trade fair.
  43. 43How do I add or delete a Custom category?Open the Overhead form, to add a cost or to change one, and click its Category.
  44. 44What are overhead categories for?They group your fixed costs by kind, so you can see where the money goes.
  45. 45What do A day and Daily P&L impact mean?A day is what a cost takes from your profit each day.
  46. 46How are yearly costs spread?A yearly cost counts as its yearly amount divided by 365, on every day it covers.
