Forecast and planning Answer 9 of 10 Updated

What does the Inventory page show?

One row per SKU with what it sold, what you hold and how long that will last: Units sold, Inventory level, Inventory value, Sales velocity / day and Stock coverage (days). It shows where your stock and the money in it stand today, at the pace of the range you pick, which is the last 30 days unless you change it.

Units sold counts the units of every order in the range that was not cancelled or a test, on its order day, minus the units refunded in the range, on the refund day. Sales velocity is those units divided by the days in the range, and stock coverage is today's inventory level divided by that velocity, so it says how many days the stock lasts at that pace. A product that did not sell in the range shows a dash for coverage rather than an endless number, and coverage is marked amber under two weeks and red once nothing is left.

Inventory value is the stock at cost: units on hand times the unit cost in force on the range's last day, which for the default range is today. A variant without a unit cost is never valued at zero: its value shows a dash, and a row that is only partly costed carries an asterisk, so the total never quietly shrinks. The missing costs go on the Products page.

Each row is one variant, named by its SKU; a variant without one, which Shopify allows, is named after its product and tagged No SKU. Gift cards are left out, since they are not stock. A Total row is pinned under the header, the search finds a name or a SKU, and Units sold, Inventory level, Inventory value and Stock coverage (days) sort with a click. With several stores selected, a Store column says whose stock a row is, and stock is counted per store.

The page reports; it does not plan. What to reorder and by when is on Insights, Inventory, which dates every variant against its lead time, and on the Forecast's purchase plan, which orders ahead of the sales the forecast expects.
