What does each card on the COGS tab mean, from unit costs to Selling blind?
The COGS tab shows what the products you sold cost you, and how changes to those costs moved your margin. COGS means cost of goods sold: what you paid for the things you sold. Open Insights, then the COGS tab. Shipping and packaging are on the Logistics tab, and rent or salaries on the Overhead tab.
The four cards at the top follow the date range you picked. COGS is what the units you sold cost you, minus the cost of units that were refunded. COGS % of Net Revenue is that cost as a share of Net Revenue. Net Revenue is what customers paid you after discounts and refunds, without VAT. Cost per net unit is COGS divided by your net units: the units sold minus the units refunded. The line under it counts them. CM1 % is the share of Net Revenue you keep after paying for the products. It is the first margin of your P&L. A product with no unit cost counts as €0,00 in all of these, which makes them look too good.
An example. You sold 400 units and 20 came back, so you have 380 net units. Each unit cost you €10,00, so COGS is €3.800,00. Cost per net unit is €3.800,00 ÷ 380 = €10,00. With €9.500,00 of Net Revenue, COGS % of Net Revenue is 40,0% and CM1 % is 60,0%. The small chip on each card compares with the same number of days just before. Red is bad and green is good, so a cost that went up is red. The chip on COGS is grey, because a bigger COGS often just means you sold more. pp means percentage points: 40,0% to 41,0% is +1,0 pp.
Unit cost changes lists every change to a product's unit cost in the last 12 months. It also shows changes you set for a future date. It does not follow the date range, and the changes with the biggest effect come first. Each row shows the product's picture and name, with its variant and SKU (your product code) under it. Effective is the day the new cost started. Orders from before that day keep the old cost, so your past profit never moves. Unit cost shows the old cost, an arrow and the new cost. Change is the difference as a share of the old cost. It is red when the cost went up and green when it went down.
Margin impact is what the change did to your profit so far. It is the change per unit times the units ordered since the change, minus the ones refunded. Example: a hoodie cost €20,00 until 31 May and €22,00 from 1 June. Since then you sold 300 and 10 came back, so 290 units. Margin impact is −€580,00: €2,00 more on each of 290 units. A cost that went down shows a plus, in green. If a cost changed twice, each change counts only its own days. A change that has not started yet carries a Starts tag. Its Margin impact is per month, at the pace of the last 30 days.
The Columns button adds more figures, in three groups. The change adds Change per unit: the new cost minus the old one. What it did adds Units since: the units the Margin impact counts. The third group, Margin now, is named after your range, like Margin now, last 30 days. It adds Price, the product's price in Shopify today. CM1 per unit is what one unit kept after its own cost. CM1 % is that as a share of its net revenue. These two follow the date range and match Insights, Products. Reset to default brings back the first view.
Click a column header to sort the table, and hover it for a short note. Hold the mouse button and drag to move the table sideways. The Product column stays put while you drag. Your choice of columns is kept in this browser.
Price vs unit cost draws two lines, one point per day, week or month, depending on your range. Avg price per unit is what you got for one unit, after discounts and refunds and without VAT. Shipping is not in it. Avg unit cost is what one unit cost you. The space between the lines is your margin on each unit. When the lines come closer, that margin gets thinner. The dashed line is COGS as a share of Net Revenue.
Selling blind shows products you sold that have no unit cost in nouz. Until you add one, nouz counts their cost as €0,00, so your profit looks better than it is. The big figure is their net revenue in the range: the revenue at stake. Below it are the biggest of them, each with its SKU, units sold and net revenue. The bottom line says how many units were counted at zero cost. Set unit costs opens the Products page, where you add them.
